Active Education Beyond the School Day
The AEBSD Programme, initiated by Sport Wales and evaluated by the Welsh Institute of Physical Activity, Health and Sport (WIPAHS), explores how schools can serve as active education settings by providing opportunities for physical activity beyond regular school hours. The pilot program engaged 13 individual schools and one federation across Wales, each tailoring their approach to meet local needs. Schools focused on enhancing access to sports and physical activities, fostering community engagement, and addressing barriers to participation such as cost, transport, and inclusivity. Key elements included developing inclusive spaces for pupils with additional learning needs, supporting disengaged groups, and improving community cohesion through sport. The evaluation highlighted the positive impact of the program on pupils’ confidence, well-being, and physical activity levels, as well as its role in reducing anti-social behaviour and strengthening school-community relationships. Full details and findings can be explored in the project evaluation report.
