Co-ordinated by Sport Wales through the Actif North Wales Foundation Subgroup, this project sought to understand the barriers and facilitators influencing parents’ engagement in community-based physical activity for pre-school children (aged 0-5 years).
To address this gap, a systematic literature review was conducted, analysing 16 studies using a socioecological framework. Findings revealed that parental beliefs about the value of physical activity, perceived benefits, and prior knowledge play a key role in decision-making. Social factors, such as parental networks and family dynamics, can act as both motivators and barriers to participation.
Key challenges include the affordability of activities and access to suitable spaces, while well-designed parks, playgroups, and infrastructure serve as important facilitators. The research highlights the need for organisations to consider the unique requirements of pre-schoolers and their families when designing physical activity initiatives.
