About

The focus of Melvyn’s research is physical activity epidemiology and public health. He has published numerous articles and systematic reviews on exercise promotion and has been involved in the evaluation of a number of large community exercise interventions. He has been a member of the Chief Medical Officer’s Physical Activity Expert Group that revised the UK’s physical activity guidelines. He has previously been a member of a range of government committees focused on physical activity and has also been a member of committees for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. His current research is directed towards the precise measurement of patterns of physical activity accumulation and their association with healthy ageing. In a collaboration between University of Exeter and Activinsights, Melvyn leads a specialist research capability in human physical activity and behaviour measurement. Activity Informatics, is a complete service for public-funded research and clinical trials that want to use wearable sensors to understand participant activity.
