About
Rachel is a Reader in Cardiovascular Physiology at the School of Sport and Health Sciences at Cardiff Metropolitan University. She serves as the Co-Lead for Applied Exercise Science at the Centre for Health, Activity, and Wellbeing Research (CAWR). Rachel’s research broadly aims to address a number of specific topics with a focus on cardiovascular adaptation and control of the cardiovascular system. These topics include: healthy ageing and exercise as medicine, in both healthy and clinical populations, and the athlete’s heart. Since joining Cardiff Met in 2015, she has been involved in the Athena Swan programme at the University and is an advocate for lifelong physical activity and its associated benefits. Rachel has set up a clinical exercise service at Cardiff Metropolitan University’s Cyncoed Campus which delivers exercise to cardiac and cancer patients in collaboration with Aneurin Bevan and Cardiff and Vale University Health Boards. Her expertise lies in the use of exercise to prevent, treat and manage long-term health conditions and the mechanisms underpinning cardiovascular disease development. As an integrative cardiovascular physiologist, she leads projects employing microneurography, 3D ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging to understand the interplay between sex hormones, the autonomic nervous system and cardio/cerebrovascular function. Her research programme supports 11 PhD students and a postdoctoral fellow. Rachel sits on the Science Committee for the Society for Endocrinology and is a member of the Physiological Society.
