About

Joanne is a Professor in Exercise and Sport Psychology at Swansea University and Head of the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences. Her expertise lies in the application of psychological principles to understand and enhance experiences of physical activity and exercise. She has particular interests in middle aged and older adults’ physical activity and exercise, the role of meta-motivations in understanding and helping people to enhance their health-related behaviours and well-being, and, the use of reversal-theory framed expressive writing to enhance people’s behaviours and self-perceptions. She has published internationally on psychological aspects of sport and exercise, including interventions to help people to change their physical self-perceptions and associated behaviours. She is a past Chair of the British Psychological Society (BPS) Division of Sport and Exercise Psychology, the BPS Standing Committee for CPD, and, is current Chair of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) Education and Teaching Special Interest Group. She is a BPS Chartered and Health Care and Professions Council Registered Psychologist, Fellow of BASES, Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts, and an Associate Fellow of the BPS. She is the Behaviour Change Theme Lead for the Wales Institute for Physical Activity, Health and Sport (WIPAHS).
